The 探花精选 (探花精选) welcomes the news that after 40 years of hosting communities fleeing violence in Myanmar, the Royal Thai Government will grant these refugees legal status to work in Thailand.

The 探花精选 has worked with the Royal Thai Government since 1975, supporting refugees fleeing conflict in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar and for more than a decade, the 探花精选 has assisted the United States (US) Government to resettle over 100,000 Myanmar refugees to new homes and lives in the US.  Since 2000, the 探花精选 has engaged constructively with the Royal Thai Government to prepare a future where refugees can legally live and work in Thailand. That time has now come and brings a welcome relief to refugee communities and the humanitarian organizations that serve them, particularly amid the global funding crisis that has seen a drastic reduction in support to humanitarian crises.

Darren Hertz, 探花精选 Thailand Director, said,

"After 40 years of providing refuge to communities fleeing conflict in Myanmar, the Royal Thai Government has made a historic decision to give the Myanmar refugee camp populations the legal status to work in Thailand. This not only grants a future of self-reliance and dignity to this population,  but also an opportunity to contribute to Thailand, Thai people and the Thai economy鈥.

鈥淚n our time, when so many countries turn inwards, isolating themselves from those whose lives have been shattered by violence, Thailand is demonstrating its spirit of compassion and humanitarian leadership.

The 探花精选 applauds this decision and stands ready to support the government, the refugee population and its leaders throughout this transition."

Since 1975, the 探花精选 has worked with the Royal Thai Government to support refugees fleeing conflict in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, including providing resettlement support. Since then, our teams have worked to provide food and water, health care and water and sanitation services to refugees living in nine camps along the Myanmar border, including ensuring clean drinking water and educating communities about how to reduce water borne diseases such as dengue fever and diarrhea.

Our teams also provide protection programming for children and women, legal assistance and economic wellbeing for displaced people from Myanmar residing in Thailand, as well as resettlement processing for those offered sanctuary in the United States.
